The Hamil Group/Fashion Icon Scholarship Contest!

FASHION AND TEXTILE DESIGN SUMMER SCHOLARSHIP

The Hamil Group and Fashion Icon, Inc. believe in the importance of education and of nurturing talented individuals so they may develop to their fullest potential. In this spirit, we are offering this design scholarship during the summer session at Parsons School of Design in New York City.

One lucky applicant will be awarded the following:

- full tuition for summer intensive studies program in fashion design at Parsons School of Design in NYC, including housing and all student services.
- $100 toward class materials
- up to $200 toward travel expenses to New York City.
- summer internship with fashion or textile design company

Details of application to the scholarship are listed in Section I below.

I. CONTEST

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS:

Applicants must be at least 16 years of age, with proof of ID, and may not be associated in any way with Hamil Group, Fashion Icon, Parsons School of Design, or other sponsor companies or affiliates of those companies. Recipient of scholarship will be expected to sign a contract agreement.

Failure to meet any of these requirements will result in immediate cancellation of eligibility. Cancellation of eligibility is solely at the discretion of the sponsor companies and releases the sponsor companies of any obligation to the winners or applicants of the contest.

DUE DATES

Starting March 30, 1999, applications will be accepted to enter the scholarship contest. All materials must be received by May 6th, 1999. Applications running behind are encouraged to enter via e-mail.

JUDGING

Judging will be held on May 7th, 1999. The winner and runners-up will be announced on www.fashion-icon.com/hamil_2000/winner.html. on May 8th, 1999. Winners will be contacted by telephone, as well as e-mail.

Judges will include some or all of the following: members of the sponsor companies, design departments of the Parson's School of Design, and representatives of the internship companies.
ENROLLMENT DATES

Enrollment date is June 27, 1999, when you will report to the Parsons Residence Hall. Orientation and your first class are on Monday, June 28. The final day of the program is Friday, July 30th (check-out of residence hall). A registration packet will be mailed to the scholarship recipient.
ENTRY MATERIALS
Application requirements:
- completed entry form
- proof of age (photocopy of driver's license, birth certificate or passport)
- essay (see last page of entry form)
- artwork (see below)
- 8" x 11" or 9" x 12" SASE (self-addressed stamped envelope for mail entries)
Eligible artwork:

Please send artwork that is most representative of your design skills. Artwork does not have to pertain to fashion or textile design directly. All entry materials must fit into one 8" x 11" or 9" x 12" envelope. There is no limit to amount of work sent. Suggestions include aforementioned catagories. If there is something that you feel is more representative of your talent, go for it! Suggestions also include, but are not limited to ideas, photographs or slides, video, illustrations, muslins, clothing. All entries must be the work of the applicant. Failure to meet this requirement will result in immediate forfeiture of application. All materials will be returned in the condition they arrived. The sponsors of the contest do not guarantee against lost, theft or damage to materials.

II. CLASSES

The recipient of the scholarship will be enrolled in the summer intensive program in fashion design, during the summer term at Parsons School of Design in New York City.

A check for $100 toward class materials will be awarded to the recipient of the scholarship.

III. INTERNSHIP

The recipient of the scholarship will be awarded an unpaid internship during their summer stay with their choice of four companies. All companies are within close proximity to Parsons School of Design. Although first choice goes to the winner, internship placement is not limited to one student. Please e-mail us interest regarding industry internship placement. The choice of internships are the following:

1. Hamil Group, textile converters.

2. Fashion Icon, online fashion magazine.

3. Robert Danes, fashion designer.

4. Gene London, fashion and costume historian.

IV. HOUSING

The recipient of the scholarship will be housed during the duration of the scholarship. Lodging will be supplied by Parson's School of Design.
*Residents of New York City are not eligible for travel or lodging portions of the scholarship.

V. TRAVEL

$200 toward travel to and from New York City is included in the scholarship. All other fees for travel are the sole responsibility of the recipient. Travel to and from NYC will be arranged by the student. Payment arrangements will be made upon signing of contract.
